Come back to the NOW.

Ever since we begin learning, we are taught to think about our future. “So, What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a question so common throughout our childhood. Most of us have grown up going through different answers to this question and then finally landing up somewhere completely different.

Future, future ,future. The future is made such an important part of our lives, that we unfortunately never actually learn the importance of the present. Atleast nobody ever told me growing up about the importance of the present. The future is important. Offcourse it is. But at what point do we actually arrive at the future? the answer is – NEVER. We are always and eternally in the present. The past is gone and the future hasn’t happened yet. What we have is the NOW.

So, most important. How do we actually start living in the present moment? How do we stop regretting the past and obsessing about the future? To me, this has been one of the most difficult processes, and is something I am still learning as well. I don’t think mindfulness is a destination anyway. It is a journey, on which we are for as long as we live.

So, Let’s finally get straight to the point. From what I have figured out, here are three points that work for me, whenever I need to pull myself back to the present.

  1. BREATHE – Yup. You’ve probably heard of this one and even read about it numerous times. But the truth is, nothing can bring you back to yourself faster than some deep breaths. The sheer feeling of air filling your lungs, is magical. Pay attention. Pay attention to each breath, and be grateful. Be grateful for another day. It may seem like you can’t clear your mind. Thoughts are racing through your mind constantly. Trust me, that’s okay. Don’t start getting upset or agitated that you can’t focus. That’ll just make it worse. Just relax. Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, the breeze, the sound of birds, crickets, the fan, anything really. Notice the smells around you. All of that, is the now. And the now, belongs to YOU. Nobody can take that away from you.

2. STOP GIVING PEOPLE THE POWER TO DECIDE YOUR VIBE – This is something I have done for almost my entire life. I was always sensitive to energy. I’d take the energy of those around me, and then blame them for my bad day. The day I realized that it doesn’t have to be like that, that there is another way, I began to try and change that. Earlier, I remember, being actually subconsciously worried about the kind of people I may meet during the day. What if they find me weird? what if they think I’m stupid? and then the slightest hint of disapproval from anybody, even if it was a total stranger, would bring my entire day down. I always had a very strong need to please people, and that played a large role in me being unable to detach from people’s energies. Get this – You are NOT responsible for anyone else’s approval or happiness. You are here to be you. The energy people carry, are their own responsibility. Just like your energy is your responsibility. Stop waiting for someone to cheer you up. Stop waiting for a better day. It’s all now. Whatever it is that you want, Believe that it is already yours, because it is. Stop sinking deeper and deeper into negative energies and then wonder what is going wrong.

3. FIND SOMETHING THAT TRULY MAKES YOU HAPPY – You know how when you do things that you really love to do, you forget everything else in those moments? Everything else around you just sort of fades away. That’s because in those moments, you are truly and completely present. It could be anything. Reading a book, playing with a pet (my personal favorite), dancing, music, cooking, gardening, writing, anything at all really. It depends on you. It could also be spending time with someone you love. I have personally noticed this, that when you spend time with certain people, time seems to go by much faster. You barely realize what is happening around you. It is important, that you find these moments, moments in which you find such deep happiness, that nothing seems to matter in that time. It is those moments, that bring magic to our lives.

The universe wants to help you. 

Read that line again. That is the truth. But you cannot be constantly worried about the past and future and not be present here at all and expect help. Who is the universe going to help? The version of you in your past doesn’t exist anymore. The version of you in your future doesn’t exist yet. So stop visiting there and living there all the time. You need to be here, in the now, to be grateful and to receive all the blessings that you ask for. You can’t receive your parcel if you order it and are constantly out of the house.

Come back home, home is here, now.

Always believe, that in this present moment, you are blessed. Don’t shut yourself away from the blessings the universe is trying so hard to give you. Open your heart, let go of your worries, even for a moment right now, and allow yourself to feel the love, and all the magic, that truly belongs to you. Your blessings are waiting. Open the door!
